What Is Couples Counseling

Understanding Couples Counseling: What It Is and How It Works

Couples counseling — also called couples therapy or relationship therapy — is a form of psychotherapy designed to help two people in a committed relationship gain insight into their relationship dynamics, resolve conflicts, and improve relationship satisfaction. At Pasadena Clinical Group, our clinicians are trained in evidence-based approaches specifically developed for working with couples.

How Couples Counseling Differs from Individual Therapy

While individual therapy focuses on one person's experiences, thoughts, and behaviors, couples counseling treats the relationship itself as the client. The therapist works with both partners simultaneously, observing interaction patterns in real time and facilitating new ways of communicating and relating.

What Happens in a Typical Session

Couples counseling sessions at our practice typically last 50 to 60 minutes and follow a structured format:

Assessment Phase

The first 1-3 sessions involve gathering information about the relationship history, current concerns, individual backgrounds, and goals for therapy. This may include individual interviews with each partner.

Active Treatment

Based on the assessment, your therapist develops a treatment plan targeting specific patterns and goals. Sessions involve guided discussions, skill-building exercises, and real-time coaching on new interaction patterns.

Integration & Maintenance

As the couple develops new skills and resolves key issues, sessions may become less frequent. The focus shifts to maintaining gains and developing strategies for handling future challenges independently.

Evidence-Based Approaches We Use

Our clinicians draw from several well-researched therapeutic frameworks, including Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), the Gottman Method, and Cognitive Behavioral Couples Therapy. The specific approach is tailored to each couple's unique needs and goals.

Who Can Benefit from Couples Counseling

Couples counseling is appropriate for partners at any stage of their relationship — from newly committed couples seeking to build a strong foundation, to long-term partners working through accumulated difficulties. You do not need to be in crisis to benefit; many couples seek therapy proactively to strengthen their relationship and prevent future problems.
